Favorite Guitar/Bass pick-brand/gauge.
« on: 11/20/06 at 12:42pm »

What's your favorite guitar/bass pick brand and your favorite gauge to play with?

As for me..

I use:

1. Dunlop U.S.A Tortex Wedge (0.73 mm) [For playing Electrics]

2. Planet Waves (0.76 mm) [For playing Electrics]

3. Planet Waves (1.04 mm) [For playing Acoustics]

4. Planet Waves (1.17 mm) [For playing Bass]

Go ahead and post your choice. Smiley

Thinner picks are harder to play rougher with G..

as for heavier picks you can play anything you want with them but the would hold back your speed.

and Akerfeldt play rhythm, right? he uses (1 mm) because he wouldn't need speed and he wouldn't be soloing..

well Mory, thicker picks are actually much better for playing fast - because they're not flapping around and and shit when you're trying to play, you have much more control.  I use 2mm and 3mm Jim Dunlop stubby picks, cause they give me some much control over my phrasing and articulation, and are a breeze to play fast with.

Yes, they give you much control.

BUT, say they're harder to use when it comes to alternate picking and actually lighter picks give a smoother sound because they slide over the string and they don't make this annoying friction sound on the last 3 strings (EAD)..

nah dude trust me light picks give you this horrible "tikataka tiaktaka" sound when alt picking fast. I admit the picks I use are pretty extreme in thickness, and most people ask me how i manage to play with them, but i  have to say after using them any other pics just don't feel the same to me.

Any bassist who uses a pick other than it's sonic qualities( e.g David Ellefson or Rex) lacks a proper right hand techinique&strengh .

??????!! sorry but there's no big difference in the sound anymore now thanx to active eq's circuits, active pickups and dedicated bass effects, also u can alter the sound of ur bass by monvin near to the bridge which gives a brighter tone, also ur thumb can be used instead of a pick, the slap tone with light overdrive and a treble boost form the eq will work better...

Damn straight!

I can play with basically any type of pick, but when it comes to playing songs that are full of pinch harmonics, I tend to use Dunlop picks (the smaller ones) I cant really remember the gauge. And I dont usually use different picks when it comes to the acoustic and electric guitar.

i usualy go with heavier stuff , i use .010s gauge strings tuned to "standard E" (d'addario or ernie ball ONLY) ,as for picks, my preferences has changed over the years, but it has always been heavy picks.

D'Andrea 1.21mm "classic celluloid" - awesome lead tones , but it wears down pretty fast , and gets really slippery if you sweat (you can over come that by making a hole in the middle of it with a screw or whatever).

Dunlop 1.14mm "purple Tortex" , slash's fav .

Dunlop "gator grip" 1.5mm for a few months , then i switched to 2mm for a few years !!
I still have loads of new ones of those at my closet , i even had that stupid gator logo tattood on my arms 3 years ago or something !

Dunlop "Jazz III" 1.38mm - that's what i use now, and i don't think i'll ever use anything else (that's what i used to say about the "gator grips" too , so don't take my word for it  Smiley ) !
I like both the black stiffos & the red nylons , but i kinda use the black ones more oftenly , cuz they have more solid tones , specially for rhythms , and they don't slip if you sweat .
Ah , forgot to say , (john petrucci , michael angelo , michael romeo , shawn lane , eric johnson) use these picks , just to name a few.  Wink

I don't play acoustic that much , and when i do, it's usually finger picking .. but if i have to use a pick on an acoustic, it's usualy my fav jazz III , or any medium gauge pick that gives a nice sound.

I use 0.11 D'addario or GHS string but i now have those extra-light 0.9's because they came with the new guitar and i am waiting for them to wear out although they're buzzing on D tuning like hell and on C tuning even more..

I usually tune to D and C..

Friendly advice to people: quit using light strings, don't look for what's easier to play on look for what gives you a cleaner tone...Hendrix used 0.11's and never used lighter and Steve Ray used 0.13 and now he uses 0.12..
