i usualy go with heavier stuff , i use .010s gauge strings tuned to "standard E" (d'addario or ernie ball ONLY) ,as for picks, my preferences has changed over the years, but it has always been heavy picks. D'Andrea 1.21mm "classic celluloid" - awesome lead tones , but it wears down pretty fast , and gets really slippery if you sweat (you can over come that by making a hole in the middle of it with a screw or whatever). Dunlop 1.14mm "purple Tortex" , slash's fav . Dunlop "gator grip" 1.5mm for a few months , then i switched to 2mm for a few years !! I still have loads of new ones of those at my closet , i even had that stupid gator logo tattood on my arms 3 years ago or something ! Dunlop "Jazz III" 1.38mm - that's what i use now, and i don't think i'll ever use anything else (that's what i used to say about the "gator grips" too , so don't take my word for it ) ! I like both the black stiffos & the red nylons , but i kinda use the black ones more oftenly , cuz they have more solid tones , specially for rhythms , and they don't slip if you sweat . Ah , forgot to say , (john petrucci , michael angelo , michael romeo , shawn lane , eric johnson) use these picks , just to name a few. I don't play acoustic that much , and when i do, it's usually finger picking .. but if i have to use a pick on an acoustic, it's usualy my fav jazz III , or any medium gauge pick that gives a nice sound.
